How I'd use google maps
(Screen capture won't load)
I would use this screen capture to help me begin connecting plate boundaries to earthquakes.
Journal Question: Look at the map and take note of the earthquakes that have occured within the past week. Try to remember where the major plate boundaries are located, if you can't remember refer to the map in your science book. What do earthquake locations and plate boundaries have in common? Then I would follow up with "Why are earthquakes and plate boundaries related?" Then also, "What can you infer about areas where there are plate boundaries, but there hasn’t been an earthquake recently?"
After teaching students about Pangaea and plate boundaries, I would use this online tool to lead into earthquakes. I would start with this lesson where I connect the plate boundaries and earthquakes together and then also have students predict where else they think earthquakes may occur if they haven’t occurred there recently.

Another mini movie
I made this!! It's simple but I'm excited about it! Make sure your sound is up, there's a little music that plays with it.
Tomb Stoning

So I've been investigating this mysterious activity that the local kids aparently do called "Tomb-stoning." I saw a sign the other day warning against doing it near the shore but I didn't know what it was. So the other day we heard that it is when you get a running start and then jump off a cliff into the ocean and try not to land on the rocks below. I've been seeing many boys running around in wetsuits and wondered what exactly they were doing because they didn't carry a surfboard or anything. Then we saw them! These kids are the one's who do this tomb-stoning. We learned that they usually do this around 5 or 6 so we walked down to the Hoe hoping to get some pictures or some video of these kids jumping into the sea. Well here they are...

Rained for quite a while today! We got this assignment where we had to go out and take some pictures and all my pictures are of wet things! In class today we learned how to take better photos and then we got a chance to go around town and try out the new tips we learned. Here's a picture I took using my camera which I then fixed a little bit using picnik I was sort of obsessed with flowers once I got going. The fuschia grow in huge bushes here and are GORGEOUS!
After my crazy photo frenzy, we went to a restaurant called The Pasta and Pizza Bar for dinner. I ate an appetizer and a dessert because it was cheaper than getting a full meal and after yesterday's huge fish and chips portion I'm trying to remember to order smaller things. I had a dessert called treacle sponge pudding. Basically it was a round cake soaked with really sweet syrup and sitting in a puddle of cream. SO GOOD! Treacle is syrup. Buddy the Elf would like treacle.
On our way home we walked by the mall nearby and there was a huge piece of artwork on the wall of the mall. It was a map of the whole town of Plymouth. The description below the picture said that this map was depicting Plymouth as it woud have been in the 18th century. So this area they call "The Hoe" must have been a place where the sheep hung out. I also learned the Plymouth is named so because the town is located at the mouth of the Plym River. Plym-Mouth...makes sense.

Arrival in Plymouth

Yesterday we toured around Plymouth and got a chance to take some pictures of the sites around town. The sea and all the buildings are really beautiful and even my fancy camera really can't do justice to how amazing all the sites are.
Had my first fish and chips meal for dinner last night at The Barbican Fish Bar. The portions were huge and I could hardly eat half what was on my plate! The food was really hot and really greasy. I hope to sample the fish and chips at other restaurants to try and compare how different restaurants make this popular dish!
To see more pictures and read more stories, check out my googlepage website and I've also uploaded many photos using Picasa. I will add a link to that in the near future when I am finished adding captions to my photos.
